Adding a Second Driver to Your Car Rental: Fees, Age Rules and Insurance Effects
What happens when you add a second driver to a car rental: how to do it, the fee, age rules, and how an unauthorised driver can affect your damage waiver coverage.
What an additional driver means
An additional driver is someone other than the renter whom the rental company has authorised to drive the vehicle. The authorisation must come from the company; a spouse, friend or travel companion does not become an authorised driver merely through their relationship with the renter.
The requirements are set by the company and location. Official policies differ on when the request must be made, what documents are required and whether the driver must sign the rental agreement. Check the applicable terms before the additional person drives.
How to request approval and what to provide
The published procedures support the following process:
- Make the request through the rental company. Dollar asks that a travelling companion who will drive be identified to its representative at the time of rental and pick-up.
- Provide the driver’s licence details. Sixt requires these details so it can verify whether the person can be added.
- Wait for the company’s decision. Sixt expressly says that it decides whether to agree to the addition. Adding a driver is therefore subject to the company’s approval, not solely to the renter’s request.
- Accept any applicable fee and agreement requirements. Sixt requires payment of the additional-driver fee after it has agreed to the addition. Thrifty defines an additional authorised driver as a person who appears at the time of rental and signs the rental agreement.
- Ensure the driver follows the contract. Under Sixt’s terms, the renter is responsible for ensuring that every additional driver understands and complies with the contract, including its driver-qualification requirements.
The document rules are company-specific. Sixt’s terms require a full, valid physical original driving licence valid for the entire rental period. They also call for a passport or identity card valid for at least 3 months beyond the end of the rental period. Sixt does not accept digital driving licences. Dollar also states that an additional driver may be subject to a driver-record check, but the policy does not say what records are checked or give any grounds or probability for rejection.
Do not assume that a companion can be added after collection. Dollar’s policy places notification at rental and pick-up, while Thrifty requires the additional driver to appear at the time of rental and sign the agreement. If the timing is unclear, the location’s policy or the rental agreement is decisive.
What adding the driver changes in fees
If nobody is added, the additional-driver provision does not create an extra authorised driver to whom that charge applies. This does not remove or reduce any young-driver charge already applicable to the renter.
An added driver may incur a separate fee:
- Hertz applies a standard fee for each additional driver added to the rental.
- Sixt requires payment of an additional-driver fee when it has approved the addition. Its definition of rental fees lists additional-driver fees separately from young-driver fees.
- Dollar ordinarily requires additional drivers, including spouses, to pay an additional-driver fee.
- Dollar and Thrifty direct customers to the local policies for the fee charged at the intended rental location.
- Sixt refers to the applicable fee on its website or to the amount notified by telephone when the request is made.
The cited official terms do not establish a universal daily amount. The price must therefore be checked in the local policy, on the company website or in the telephone quote, as applicable. A quoted basic rental package should not be treated as including an additional driver.
Dollar provides stated exceptions to its additional-driver fee and separate qualification process. These apply to Dollar Express Rewards members, government renters on official orders using a government rate plan, corporate account customers using corporate rate plans, and drivers or companions of physically impaired customers. The driver must still meet Dollar’s minimum-age requirement and hold a valid licence.
Age checks and young-driver charges
Every additional authorised driver must qualify to drive the vehicle. Dollar expressly applies its minimum-age and valid-licence requirements to all additional drivers, including spouses. The cited policy does not state a single minimum age that applies everywhere.
A second driver can independently trigger a young-driver charge even when the main renter is older:
- Hertz’s young-driver surcharge applies if the renter or any additional driver is under 25 years old.
- Under Dollar’s policy, an authorised driver aged 20 to 24 may be charged an underage-driver fee. The stated band is 18 to 24 in Michigan, New York and the province of Quebec.
- Dollar states that this underage-driver fee may apply in addition to the additional-driver fee, if applicable.
The applicable young-driver band and minimum-age rule must therefore be checked for the specific company and location. A person who does not fall within the applicable young-driver band is not shown by these cited policies as independently triggering that charge.
Insurance and the authorised-driver scope
Adding a driver is an insurance issue because it changes who is authorised to operate the vehicle. It does not create unrestricted insurance coverage for that person.
Under FTC consumer guidance, if collision damage waiver, or CDW, has been purchased, coverage could be cancelled if an unauthorised person drives the rental. Hertz’s liability limitations also distinguish between a main or additional driver whom it has authorised and a driver whom it has not authorised.
The practical distinction is:
- Without an approved addition: the other person remains outside the company’s authorised-driver category. A spouse or companion cannot be assumed to fall inside it.
- With an approved addition: the person becomes an authorised driver under the rental agreement, subject to the agreement’s conditions. The agreement establishes authorisation; the applicable insurance terms determine how cover responds to a claim.
The evidence does not establish that adding a driver automatically guarantees every form of insurance. Check the CDW and other insurance provisions in the rental agreement rather than assuming that a signed addition makes all losses covered.
Dollar also states that the renter and any additional drivers are absolutely liable for loss or damage to the rental vehicle, even if someone else caused it or the cause is unknown, subject to applicable law. For third-party injury or property-damage claims, it identifies the renter and any additional authorised driver, together with their respective insurance companies, as primarily responsible unless applicable law provides otherwise.
Separate insurance may already be relevant. The FTC says that personal car or home insurance may provide coverage, depending on the policy. It also says that many credit cards offer CDW when used to pay for the rental, but the cardholder must decline the rental company’s coverage to remain eligible for that card benefit.
Who may drive the vehicle
Thrifty states that its vehicle may be driven only by an authorised driver. It defines the renter and any additional person who appears at the time of rental and signs the agreement as authorised drivers.
Without a properly approved addition, do not treat a spouse, friend or other companion as authorised simply because they are travelling with the renter. With an approved addition, the person may drive only within the rental period and under the conditions of the agreement.
The additional driver’s conduct also matters. Hertz says it is responsible for providing an equivalent replacement after a mechanical breakdown only if the breakdown was not caused by the fault of the renter or an additional driver.
Spouses, companions and stated exceptions
A spouse is not automatically covered. Dollar expressly says that all additional drivers, including spouses, must meet its minimum-age requirement, hold a valid licence and pay an additional-driver fee.
The only exceptions identified in the evidence are Dollar’s stated categories:
- Dollar Express Rewards members
- government renters on official orders using a government rate plan
- corporate account customers using corporate rate plans
- drivers or companions of physically impaired customers
Dollar also states that there is no additional charge for an additional authorised driver for a non-driving disabled renter. These are Dollar-specific fee provisions, not general exceptions for every rental company. They should not be read as giving blanket permission for any spouse or companion to drive without following the applicable authorisation requirements.
If an additional-driver charge is disputed
Keep the rental agreement, reservation details and any written fee quote. The cited terms do not establish one universal deadline for disputing an additional-driver charge.
Under Hertz’s terms, disputes about credit or debit-card charges or damage billing must be communicated to Customer Relations within 14 days of the end of the rental. The communication should include the rental agreement or reservation number, full information and supporting evidence. Hertz aims to deal with customer contacts within 14 days; this is a Hertz term, not a general deadline for other companies.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Can the rental company refuse to add a driver? Yes. Sixt expressly decides whether it will agree, and Dollar requires every additional driver to meet its qualification requirements. The request is therefore subject to the company’s terms and is not a unilateral right.
-
How much does an additional driver cost? The amount depends on the company and location. Hertz applies a standard fee for each added driver, while the other cited policies refer to local, website or telephone pricing; no universal daily amount is established in the evidence.
-
Can the second driver trigger a young-driver charge independently of my age? Yes. Hertz applies its surcharge if the renter or any additional driver is under 25, while Dollar may charge an authorised driver in its stated young-driver age band even when the additional-driver fee also applies.
-
Is a spouse automatically authorised and exempt from the fee? No. Dollar expressly includes spouses among the additional drivers who must qualify and pay its additional-driver fee. Its limited fee exceptions apply only in the stated categories.
-
Does adding a driver guarantee insurance coverage for that person? Only the company can authorise the driver, and authorisation does not by itself guarantee every insurance benefit. An unauthorised driver could cause CDW coverage to be cancelled under the cited FTC guidance.
